Old York Historical Society

A warm note of thanks goes to the Old York Historical Society for inviting me to give a lecture and workshop on the History of Milk Paint. Another big thanks to the most creative group of students who joined me. We all had a great time learning and painting in such a beautiful environment.

We learned that Milk Paint is the oldest formula made from a milk protein called casein. It has been found in ancient caves and Egyptian tombs. We learned how to mix, how to apply it on different substrates and how to create various resist techniques to showcase an authentic chippy appearance. When used on raw wood it will never chip or peel. Alternatively, when applied over an existing finish it can create a beautiful time worn appearance in a very short time frame.

The group was so open to trying something new and they really let their creative side flow! They came up with some beautiful and unique finishes on the sample boards and the small trinket boxes. I couldn’t help but be proud of them! It was a fun field trip for me and I look forward to offering another class in the future.

As always, check out our wide range of workshop offerings at Signature Finishes. We are very flexible so call us to arrange a special subject or special timeframe to suit your needs.

Best, Maureen
