Signature Finishes Hosts a Workshop at Old York Historical Society

Please join me at the Old York Historical Society on Saturday, September 12th from 1-3pm. The workshop will include a brief lecture and make and take workshop.  

 Milk Paint is one of the oldest known paint formulas, with a history that stretches back thousands of years across multiple civilizations. This workshop explores the fascinating evolution of milk paint—from its early use in ancient societies to its revival in modern sustainable design.

Participants will learn how milk paint was originally made using simple, natural ingredients like milk protein (casein), lime, and earth pigments. The workshop will trace its use in places such as ancient Egypt, where artisans used similar organic paints to decorate tombs and artifacts, and in early American history, where it became a staple for painting furniture, barns, and homes due to its affordability and durability.

We’ll also examine why milk paint fell out of favor with the rise of synthetic paints during the Industrial Revolution, and how it has reemerged today as an eco-friendly, non-toxic alternative embraced by artists, craftspeople, and designers.

Through demonstrations and discussion, participants will gain an appreciation for milk paint’s unique matte finish, rich historical roots, and continued relevance in sustainable practices. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a deeper understanding of how this ancient medium connects past traditions with contemporary creativity.  Each student will have the opportunity to learn to mix the milk paint and you will paint a small decorative box as a make and take project. You will have multiple color options at your disposal. Many samples will be on display for inspiration as well.
